Anti-Americanism in Egypt: Sadat

With SADAT the situation changed, especially due to the Yom Kippur War.

1967: SIX DAYS WAR.

1973: YOM KIPPUR WAR ➔ the U.S. had an important role in resolving the problem, according to Sadat. It is common opinion that the U.S. has the “key” to solve the problems of the region, but it is said with criticism (the Egyptians didn’t want the U.S. to intervene in their area).

INFITAH (“to open”): open door economic policy ➔ the economy was opened and there was a move from socialism towards capitalism. Private investments were allowed, and they were basically U.S. investments.

1979: CAMP DAVID Accords:
1st Protocol: peace between Israel and Arab states.
2nd Protocol: peace between Egypt and Israel.
➔ the U.S. started to give every year more and more funds to Egypt ➔ money was basically given to military and some economic projects.

Beginning of a “Cold War” between Israel and Egypt, that continues nowadays.

Sadat also tried to change the society ➔ AMERICANIZATION OF EGYPT (e.g. American University in Cairo): even if there were some groups of anti-Americanism, the situation changed.
Sadat was killed in 1981 by an extremist. There was a fatwa in favour of the killing of Sadat.
[A fatwa is a legal declaration made by a sheikh in order to say if to do or not to do something]
