Theme in clause complex

The situation with complex sentences is different. First of all, a distinction must be made between coordinate and subordinate clauses.
A sentence made up of a subordinate clause and of a main clause can be analysed at two levels: firstly, at the level of the clause and secondly at the level of the whole sentence.
At the level of the whole sentence, it is the whole of the subordinate clause that acts as Theme and the whole of the main clause which acts as Rheme.
