Tolkien and the myth: an analysis of The Silmarillion

The following analysis of The Silmarillion will show how this great piece of literature became the book we know today. By means of four crucial episodes of The Silmarillion, the attempt has been undertaken to analyse and explain the complex world created by Professor Tolkien. The Silmarillion was intended to substitute the missing Anglo-Saxon mythology. However, the author’s strongreligious beliefs influenced the laws and beliefs related in the book. In order to fit his own mythology into the whole northern mythological beliefs, he reproduced many customs from the Norse mythology and also some stories from the Finnish mythology. In the following text these similarities have been underlined and emphasized.
