Life Can Imitate Art: an Approach to Movie Induced Tourism

Life can Imitate art”
This is the title of my thesis. Starting from this concept I want to begin to explain the reasons why I have choosen as theme of my work the not well known phenomenon of Movie Induced Tourism. Movie Induced Tourism induces to discover the locations and emotions that are hidden behind the greatest machine of dreams Cinema, perhaps the most known cultural industry of the world. In this sense the tourists imitate, visiting a movie location, the art of cinema.
I have thought that uniting cinema, my first great passion, and tourism, my curriculum of study and locating these two element in the City par excellance, New York, could be an interesting way to end my cycle of studies.
In recent years many researches have shown that the moving image has great power to alter, create and reinforce specific destinations images as there is no doubt that film has become a dominant source of information. It is exactly in this direction that my work is oriented.
In Chapter one I explain in what this phenomenon consists, the effects of cinema on the human-social-economic behaviour of people and why people are attracted to visit a film location.
In Chapter two I show how to calculate the real effects of this new trend to understand and to represent with datas the visitation increase in locations of selected motion pictures and also how Movie Induced Tourism may became a perfect means of promotion.
In Chapter Three I focus my attention on New York, location of many films. With the example of this City I try to describe the concepts treated in the previous chapters.
