The Strategic Consequences of the U.S.-India Nuclear Deal: A Theoretical Assessment

This paper focuses on what could be considered the most consequential development for the non-proliferation regime of the post-Cold War era: the implementation of the pact of civil nuclear cooperation between the United States and India. Specifically, this essay provides a review of the US-India nuclear deal’s genesis; a scrutiny of the agreement’s terms and negotiation process; and an exposition of four alternate scenarios about the consequences of the deal’s entering into effect.
The essay emphasizes the importance of theories. The insights provided by the competing theoretical approaches in the field of nuclear proliferation are indeed essential to appreciate how nuclear policies are formulated and fully grasp the scope of their consequences. Accordingly, this article will heavily rely on the main paradigms of international relations– liberalism and realism–to explain the logic behind nuclear proliferation or renunciation and illustrate the consequences of the U.S.-India nuclear deal.
