On the contrary, when passing from    to   (position   ), not belonging to the same RNC, a re-routing from Path I to Path II is needed; at radio interface, this correspond to an Inter-RNC Handover. The decision whether to perform a Handover (and towards which target BS) is taken according to a given Handover Algorithm (HA), whose inputs are the measurements carried out both at the BS and at the MT [6]. In this context, the user’s QoS strongly depends on the HA. The ex- ecution of Intra-RNC Handovers can provide Seamless Service. During Inter-RNC Handovers (those requiring Path Re-Routing) the information ow can be interrupted for long intervals, thus creating temporary lack of service [46]. For this reason, several approaches have been pro- posed in the literature to provide Path Re-Routing times as short as possible, to supply Seamless Service: Path Extension , Full Re-establishment , Partial Re-establishment are some ex- amples [43, 47, 48, 50, 70, 71, 72, 74]. In this thesis the issues of the impact of the AN architecture (Fig. 1.7) on the network performance are introduced [1, 2, 3]. To justify this, it is necessary to remember that, in 3G context, the capacity and size of RNCs are expected to be smaller than in 2G systems, because the bit rates of Multimedia Services (video, data, etc...) are larger, when compared to the ones
