Gender Culture in the Mediterranean Area


Women are very present in the process of democratization in the Middle East.
14/01/2011: starting point of the Arab Revolutions.

TUNISIA and EGYPT share the adoption of reforms promulgated by the Ottoman Empire in XIX century. At the beginning of 1800, the Empire realized that it had a strong retard compared with Europe.
[Tunisia was not a province, but it was under the influence of the Ottoman Empire]

They called experts from Europe in order to close this gap. These reforms could not be applied in Algeria (that was already under the control of France) and Libya (under the direct control of the Ottoman Empire).
