Multiple Themes




We identify the Theme by selecting the first element in the sentence and view it as point of departure of the message.
In this example: "In short, coppurtion in the countries lies at the very heart of its economic and political troubles" where, "In short" is the Theme and the rest of the sentence is the Rheme.
The starting point of the message is an expression which indicates that we are about to read a summary: 'in short' is a textual marker which helps us organize information in the text.
While simple themes form a single constituent in the structure, multiple themes include elements which can be categorized as textual, interpersonal and topical.
Interpersonal themes refers to the writer's attitude to what he's writing (Unfortunately, Perhaps --> I express the idea of probability)
