Comparative investigation of perceptual organization, postural stability and receptive vocabulary among dyslexics with and without ADHD

The present study investigated differences between Dyslexics with and without ADHD on basis of Perceptual Organization, Postural Stability and Receptive Vocabulary. On basis of scientific evidences, it was assumed that Dyslexics with ADHD will perform poorly on all tests than Dyslexics without ADHD. The sample was drawn on the basis of purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of forty eight participants; twelve Dyslexic’s group each and twenty four normal controls, age ranged (M= 12.29, SD= 1.11, M= 12.16, SD= 0.84 and M= 12.35, SD= 0.683) based on screening tools. Bangor dyslexia screening test and Barkley interview form were used as screening tools. Perceptual Organization was assessed by Rey-Osterrieth Complex Test, Postural Stability by Postural Stability Index and Receptive Vocabulary was assessed by Dichotic Listening Word Test. The results were highly significant (p < .005). Thus Dyslexics with ADHD had poor quality of performance on visual-spatial and auditory tasks.

1 COMPARATIVE INVESTIGATION OF PERCEPTUAL ORGANIZATION, POSTURAL STABILITY AND RECEPTIVE VOCABULARY AMONG DYSLEXICS WITH AND WITHOUT ADHD For decades, dyslexics have been one of the most misunderstood groups in our society. This misconception has lead to mislabeling of this subset. One may attribute the mislabeling, then, to the intricacy of the diagnostic process as well as proper understanding of neurological functioning in these individuals. Conditions such as Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and many others should be considered before labeling or even before the diagnostic process is started. Keeping in view the importance of understanding of neurological functioning e.g. Perceptual Organization (visual-spatial ability), Postural Stability and Receptive Vocabulary, present research will study differences among Dyslexics with and without ADHD. Higher order brain functions e.g. those discussed above, have widely been investigated with reference to Dyslexics and ADHD. Researches have shown links between visual-auditory functioning and Dyslexia (Catts, Fey, Zhang, & Toblin, 1999; Lombardino, Riccio, Hynd, & Pinheiro, 1997; Manis, Seidenberg, Doi, McBride-Chang, & Petersen, 1996; Stringer & Stanovich, 2000). However limited amount of researches have focused on studying affect of comorbid disorders on executive functioning of Dyslexics. Furthermore, there is little or no research including children despite of the fact that children show reduced activity due to influence of more than one disorders co-occurring at the same time.
