The Coping Strategy Index, a Participatory Impact Indicator for Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation of Food Security

The purpose of this thesis was to assess the feasibility of a participatory food security indicator, the coping strategy index (CSI), in a monitoring and evaluation system that focuses on the outcomes and impact of food security interventions.
The research methodology consisted in a critical review of the relevant literature and direct interviews with informants with a specific subject matter expertise.
The study elaborated a series of criteria for the evaluation of the CSI and, on this basis, analysed the qualities and limits of the indicator in relation to the information needs of different end-users involved in food security policies, programmes and projects.
The finding is that the CSI is a feasible indicator in Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation (RB M&E) of food security. Nevertheless, further research would be needed for strengthening the CSI methodology and mainstreaming this indicator in the food security development practice.
