The Social Cost of Transportation in Bergamo Local Economy

Air Pollution estimated cost is employed in this thesis in order to evaluate the social cost resulted from transportation in the province of Bergamo. Comment is made specifically on the responsiveness of significant variables (such as population, number of firms, distance to highway/motorway/airport, peak hour...) acting as a proxy of transportation entities (mobility, volume of traffic, source of pollution...). The is found to be an useful approximation which is very helpful in making choice or decision on complex inter-related issue such as transportation and environment sustainability. An individual, politicians, or government are highly recommended to take this highly comprehensive comparison, on quantify and monetized externality, as a reference in order to better react to the worsening air quality and expanding transportation system.

      5   INTRODUCTION Urban outdoor air pollution is estimated to cause 1.3 million deaths worldwide per year. (WHO, 2011 1 ) It goes without saying that air pollutant is highly accountable for a spectrum of sickness: respiratory infections, lung cancer and cardiovascular problems. Beside short-medium term effects of air pollutant, transportation strategy is not seen as sustainable in a long-term perspective. According to a report of European Commission (2009), the goals of the EU SDS (as indicated in the progress report of 2007) are not well achieved 2 . The European transport system is still away from a sustainable path, with respect to other sectors.
