4 PREFACE This thesis has been written in Augsburg, particularly the antenna measurament have been realised into Fachhochschule laboratory. I wish to thank Prof. De Leo for the possibilità was given me to have abroad experience, then in particularly I wish to thank Prof. Liesenkoetter, who followed me for the thesis drafting, and finally Mr Kaufmann for completing the antenna and measuring. In this thesis it has been studied the feasibility of a train-detection radar system, composed to three radar sensors, includine design and verification of the antenna system. ° The first part Ref.[1] ,[2] ,[3] presents basic concepì, defines parameters, and discusses fundamental that have been needed for a reliability study. ° The second part Ref.[2] ,[3] deals a reliability prediction, particularly calclation of: reliability, failure rate, MTBF, availability, (by using the first part knowledge’s)of the three radar sensors system. These calculation have been done in different situations, that is by using repairable componetns, common cause failure and using a improvement technique as the redundancy. After that , there has been a reliability calculation to single radar sensor by using the FMECA technique. ° The third part Ref.[4] ,[5] ,[6] ,[7] ,[8] presents the design and testing of a 4x4 patch–antenna-array monopulse type, intended for the surveillance radar has been designed and realised. The patch design has shown good results of pattern radiatio and input impedante equal to 50 ohm. ° Finally the first appendix is dedicated to program Mstrip40, Ref.[11] , and the second appendix Ref.[9] ,[10] introduces a realisation of a possibile conical horn of monopulse type.
